The Firey Furnace
The Firey Furnace

King Nebuchadnezzar made a great big image of gold. He commanded that when the people heard the sounds of music, they must fall down and worship the idol. If they did not do this, they would be thrown into a fiery furnace.

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego worshipped God. They knew that it was wrong to worship idols. When the music sounded, they did not worship the gold image.

King Nebuchadnezzar was angry. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual. Then, his guards tied up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego threw them into the fiery furnace. While they were in the fire, the king said, “Wasn't it three men we threw into the fire? Look there are four men walking around in the fire. They are not tied up and they are not harmed!” King Nebuchadnezzar went to the opening of the furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, come out!”

The three men came out of the fiery furnace. The fire had not burned them at all and they did not even smell like smoke. Nebuchadnezzar said, “Blessed be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. God sent His angel to pro.tect them. I am making an order, if anyone says anything against God, he shall cut into

pieces! No one could save these men but God."

From this story, we learn that sometimes people who do not love God will try to make God’s people do bad things. The Bible says that we should not be like the people of the world (Romans 12:2). We should try to be like Jesus (Romans 8:28).

We also learn that if we are faithful to God, other people will see it and give glory to God. Jesus said, “Let your light shine to people, so they will see the good things you do and glorify God because of it” (Matthew 5:16).

Would God have been happy with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego if they worshipped the idol? Is God happy when we do things wrong?
