The High Cost of Sin

ur world recognizes failures, conflicts, and social ills – but too often it does not recognize sin. Sin connotes a wrongdoing for which one is responsible before God, and modern man does not want to see himself in this light. A problem may be disgraceful, corrupt, prejudicial, or harmful, but never sinful! The concept of sin against a personal God is missing. In an era of “no fault” insurance and divorce, there is a need for moral and spiritual accountability. One way to bring this problem to light is to stress just how damaging and hurtful sin really is. In other words, we all must recognize the high cost of sin.

Using Samson (Judges 16) as a case study, brother Wendell Winkler has so clearly pointed out how costly participation in sin can be for each of us. Samson is known for being self-willed and rebellious. He refused the wise counsel of his parents. He kept numerous evil associations. He courted temptation and eventually participated in fornication. (Do any of these characteristics sound familiar or remind you of yourself?) For all of this, he paid a very high price. It is widely known that he lost his strength when Delilah cut his hair (Judges 16:19), but this is just the beginning. His sinful actions also cost him his sight as the Philistines gouged out his eyes (v. 21), and cost him his freedom as he was tossed into jail. There were no voices of comfort or compassion in that prison – he was all alone.

Just like Samson, sin can steal our strength as well. Sin will weaken one spiritually, physically, and emotionally. In such condition, one is prone to long days and even longer nights of sadness. Sin can also cost us our ability to see. Sin will blind one to its reality, its nature, its consequences and also to the beauty of holiness. The Laodiceans were so spiritually complacent they could not see how ugly and miserable they really were

(Rev. 3:17-18). Notice also 1 John 2:9-11 and Matt. 13:15-16.

Ultimately, the sin of Samson led to his own death (Judges 16:30). Such is true for us today as well. The Bible indicates that sin brings forth spiritual death. “Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James 1:15). Please also note Romans 6:23; Ezekiel 18:20; and Revelation 21:8. The choices we make today, determine our eternal destiny. How much are you willing to risk and to pay? The price of fame and fortune? Moses was willing to forgo money and notoriety if it conflicted with being obedient to God (Heb. 11:25). Are you willing to risk being eternally separated from God? “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (Isa. 59:2). There is no higher price an individual can pay than to be separated from his or her God.

Ours is not the only death caused by sin – our sin is also the cause of the death of Jesus Christ upon the cross. The sins of each human – the sins that you and I have committed – were paid for by the blood of Jesus Christ. “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” (Eph. 1:7; cf. Col. 1:14). Jesus left the glory of heaven (Phil. 2:5-11) in order to save us from sin (Matt. 20:28; 1 Tim. 2:6). We did not deserve such special treatment. We do not deserve such wonderful love (Romans 5:8). How grateful we should be to our Lord and Savior for paying such a high price! A cost that we could never cover – the high cost of sin.
