The Christian Walk Is One Of Faith

In II Corinthians 5:7 we read, "For we walk by faith, not by sight." In other words, we live our Christian life by faith in contrast to the temporal things of life. In the same writing, Paul instructs the Corinthians to trust in things eternal, "While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." Thus, our Christian walk in life is one of faith.

How do we walk by faith?

The Psalmist wrote, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet , and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105). This verse encourages all to be guided by the word of God. Why? Because it is the lamp and the light for our feet and path in life. Without the word of God, we walk aimlessly on the wide road of life. Jesus said it this way in Matthew 4:4, "...It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Again, the emphasis is on being guided or nourished by scripture in contrast to things that are earthly. Hence, our walk by faith is a walk guided by the Bible.

Why is it necessary to walk by faith?

Jeremiah records it so clearly, "O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps" (Jeremiah 10:23). He said it is NOT within ourselves to direct or guide our steps or walk in life. We are not capable of guiding ourselves correctly or rightly or faithfully. As people, we need direction in life, especially guidance from above. Also, walking by faith keeps us from wavering or being fooled by Satan. We read in Ephesians 4:14, "That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;" Without guidance from scripture, we can be carried about by every wind of doctrine or teaching. But, if we walk by faith, we will not be fooled by Satan or his false prophets.

How do we get faith?

The church at Rome was told, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). Our faith comes directly from the word of God. The word of Christ is the source of our faith. Thus, the Christian walk of faith is synonymous to walking by the word of God. Hence, we must allow the word to direct and guide our lives as Christians. Without the word, we have no faith.

The faith that pleases God.

The Hebrew writer wrote, "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him" (Hebrews 11:6). Without faith we cannot please our Lord. We become pleasing to God when we do what He says. "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15). If we truly love and want to please God, we will walk by faith. The faith that pleases God, is a faith that stands upon God's word. How do you walk? We hope your walk in life is by faith.
