(Old Testament, continued from page 5)
The other three were read as lessons when the people gathered together in the synagogue for services. Some of the books were also used as songs and portions were prayers offered to God. Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon are the Books of Poetry.
The Books of the Prophets: The last 17 books of the Old Testament are called the Books for the Prophets. These books contain information on several prophecies made concerning the coming of Christ, the captivity of the Hebrew nation, and other such prophecies. They are divided into 2 sections: (1) Major Prophets and (2) Minor Prophets. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel are considered the books of the Major Prophets. Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi are considered the books of the Minor Prophets.
The Old Testament was broken into divisions to make things easier to find and understand. The books are not in the order they were written. In the next article, we will take a look at how the books of the New Testament have been divided.
