Hearing Of
Their Faith

Amid the bustling activity of the San Diego metropolitan area is a busy group of Christians laboring in the vineyard of the Lord. The Chula Vista church of Christ, located at 470 L Street in Chula Vista, leaves no soul untouched as their light shines and their good works continue to abound.

Established in 1944 with 50 members, the brethren began meeting in the Women’s Club building and later in the Vista Community Hall. From this location, the church purchased property on 4th street in Chula Vista and constructed their first building, which they occupied in 1954 with about 72 members. Years later, the church moved into a larger building at 470 L Street, where they continue to worship today.

Though the congregation currently has no elders or deacons, they are well grounded and look for the day in which elders and deacons may be ordained. Donald Underwood is currently serving as the minister and has been with them for two and a half years. With 120 members of all ages, there is no shortage of workers who lead in worship and teach in Bible classes.

In addition to the Sunday morning and Wednesday evening Bible classes for all ages, the congregation also provides an extensive Bible study on Saturdays. As an extension of the Saturday School and in cooperation with the Online Academy of Biblical Studies, they have also started the Chula Vista School of Bible Studies, a full time program that offers a two-year certificate for preachers and/or teachers.

The Chula Vista congregation supports Randy and Renata Watson as they serve as missionaries in eastern Europe. They also support African missionaries, Shane and Carole Gage. Additionally, they provide support to the City of Children, a home for orphans, and other programs that provide for the needs of children.

Having a large and spacious building and grounds, the church allows it to be used by the Southwestern Christian School, which is a private school for grades kindergarten through 6th. They also support and house the Spanish speaking

congregation. The Iglesia de Christo has 70 members and their preacher is Carlos Perez. They meet on the second level with services at the same time as the English speaking group.

The congregation is extremely active in evangelism through various methods of public and private Bible studies. Last year, they hosted a debate between a representative of the Reformed Baptist Church and brother David Brown of Spring, Texas. They will again be hosting a debate this coming March and Donald Underwood will meet Mr. Cook from the Reformed Baptist Church.

It is the goal of the Chula Vista church of Christ to continue to grow spiritually and numerically in the San Diego area. They have set a goal of studying with 100 people for this year and they plan to expand their School of Biblical Studies to train many men to preach the Gospel of Christ.

Services at the Chula Vista church of Christ and the Iglesia de Christo begin with Sunday morning Bible study at 9:00am, followed by worship at 10:00am. Sunday evening worship is at 6:00pm and Wednesday evening Bible class starts at 7:00pm. For times of other Bible studies associated with either the Saturday Study or the School of Bible Studies, contact them at: 470 L Street, Chula Vista, Ca. 91911 or call (619) 422-7747.

If you are visiting in the San Diego area, stop by and visit with these brethren and you will find that they are both pleasant to be with and fervently zealous for the cause of Jesus Christ.
