EVEN THE SMALLTHINGS
SHOW HIS HANDIWORK
by Roelf L. Ruffher

It never ceases to amaze me the complexity the Creator has placed in His Creation. I believe that they are but signs pointing to Him. As King David wrote almost 3,000 years ago, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork” (Psalm 19:1).

Such were my exact feelings a few weeks ago when my son discovered a beehive on the north side of the Southside Church of Christ building in Carlsbad. This basketball sized structure was hanging from the side of roof. It was a beautifully layered insect city with its inhabitants coming and going through the air.

Out of concern for the children nearby and myself (I was stung on the head!), I contacted a local beekeeper. He did a great job in removing the hive and containing the queen and her workers in a portable hive. Much to my astonishment he informed me that what you could see of the hive on the roof was only the “tip of the iceberg”. The hive extended at least six feet back into the attic. And instead of containing about 20,000 workers, as most hives do, this one contained at least 50,000! I asked him how long the hive had been there, thinking of a time period of at least a year. But he said they probably had been in that location for only a few months.

I wondered how this instinct driven insect could engineer a city in the air built almost entirely of wax. Each of those workers carried out a master plan as if every one of them was a professional architect. They produced a marvel of engineering containing thousands of individual cells, which fit together better than man-made bricks do in a human-inspired structure. There was intelligent design at work here, and that not of man.

Yet some folks delude themselves into believing that the honeybee and its hive are the products of blind chance or evolution; the result of which manifested itself some 40,000,000 years ago. Starting with some primordial soup billions of years ago, amino acids just happened to produce Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA). By a roll of the proverbial dice that DNA combined in just the right sequence and formed a “primitive” single celled organism. Again, over millions of years this organism by trial and error became even more complex forming a multi-cellular animal. Eventually that animal developed a nervous system, eyes, ears, legs, a cardiovascular system, a respiratory system, a digestive system, etc.

Amazingly this “primitive” animal cleverly found a way to breathe air rather than water (Don't try the reverse at home!). And over thousands of generations this air-breathing animal mutated in such a way that he could live on land without dehydrating. And of course the rest is “evolutionary” history: development of an exoskeleton, hinged membrane wings, the ability to fly like a combination helicopter-airplane, a social system, honey, wax, a body covered with sensitive hairs and a stinger loaded with five different kinds of venom. ( Mark L. Wilson, The Biology of the Honey Bee, Harvard University Press, 1987).

Dear reader, imagine yourself hacking your way through the jungles of the Amazon River Basin. Suddenly you find a clearing with a magnificent home placed within it. Logic would force you to conclude that someone built it; it did not build itself. The same logic applies to the honeybee, apes mellifera. It could not have evolved over millions, billions or trillions of years. It could only have been created by the Omnipotent Mind. It takes more faith to believe in the “theory” of evolution than it does the God of the Bible.
