A Resolution To Be Thankful

Every new year, people make certain commitments, or “resolutions” to make them a better person. It is very important that we do this—not only at the beginning of every New Year that God has given us—but every day, if we are to be pleasing to God. Being thankful is one of the things we must be, in order to follow what the Bible says.

The Bible mentions in the Old Testament (Psalm 107:8), and in the New Testament (I Thess. 5:18), about being thankful. There are many more verses about thankfulness than what I have mentioned. So, do you think that it is something that God thinks is important? I do. As a teacher, I have seen many students of all ages that do not say, “Please” or “Thank You.” I have also seen brides who have gotten married and never sent a “Thank You” note for the gift. What does that say about these two situations? It says, “I’ll take it, but I’m not very thankful.”

We not only need to be thankful to people, but also to God in prayer (Psalm 100:4). When you pray, do you begin with the things that you are happy to have? Mention to God that you are thankful for being healthy, or having a house and clothes. When I was in the hospital with Valley Fever, I remember thinking how I wished I could get up and go to work. That may sound funny, but it is a lot better than lying down and not being able to do anything. Even two and a half years later, I will still mention in my prayers how thankful I am that I got better.

Let us not only be thankful to each other, but to God as well. After all, it is because of Him that we are blessed in the first place. We know the Golden Rule of Matt. 7:12: “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (NKJV)
