Some Glaring Deficiencies of Mormonism

“The Book of Mormon must be either true or false […] If false, it is one of the most cunning, wicked, bold, deep-laid impositions ever palmed upon the world; calculated to deceive and ruin millions who will sincerely receive it as the word of God, and will suppose themselves securely built upon the rock of truth until they are plunged, with their families, into hopeless despair. The nature of the Book of Mormon is such that, if true, no one can possibly be saved and reject it; if false, no one can possibly be saved and receive it. Therefore, every soul in all the world is equally interested in ascertaining its truth or falsity […] If, after rigid examination, it be found an imposition, it should be extensively published to the world as such. The evidence and arguments upon which the imposture was detected should be clearly and logically stated, that those who have been sincerely, yet unfortunately, deceived may perceive the nature of the deception, and be reclaimed, and that those who continue to publish the delusion may be exposed and silenced” (Orson Pratt, Introduction To Divine Authenticity To The Book of Mormon, pp. 124-25; as quoted by Roy H. Lanier, Mormon Doctrine tract, privately published).

The same could also be said for two other works that those of the Mormon religion hold to be authoritative: The Pearl of Great Price and The Doctrine and Covenants. In the space allotted for this article, we shall point out some glaring deficiencies of Mormonism. If it can be shown that these three books contradict themselves or the Bible, then it will be clear that they are to be rejected. This is exactly what the Mormon leader and “apostle” Orson Pratt wanted us to do. More importantly, such is what our Lord would have us to do (Matt. 7:15-16; 24:4-5; 1 Thess. 5:21; 1 John 4:1).

One could spend a considerable amount of time noting the grammatical errors or documenting the contradictions between the three Mormon books. Our time shall be spent documenting the contradictions between the Mormon books and the Bible. If the Bible is true, then The Book of Mormon, The Pearl of Great Price, and The Doctrine and Covenants are all false. If these other books are true, then the Bible is false. It is that simple.

1. Book of Mormon – Jesus born in Jerusalem (Alma 7:10)
Bible – Jesus born in Bethlehem (Luke 2:4-7)

2. Pearl of Great Price – Joel’s prophecy unfulfilled (Joseph Smith 2:41)
Bible – Peter clearly indicates that these events were the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy (Acts 2:16-21)
3. Book of Mormon – darkness at Jesus’ death lasted three days (3 Nephi 8:20-23)
Bible – darkness at Jesus’ death lasted three hours (Mark 15:33)
4. Book of Mormon – the Church was established in the Old Testament days [approximately 147 B.C.] (Mosiah 18:17)
Bible – the Church was established after Jesus’ life (Matthew 16:18)
5. Book of Mormon – the name “Christian” was used before Christ became flesh (Alma 46:15)
Bible – the name “Christian” was first used after the death of Christ (Acts 11:26)
6. Book of Mormon – Christ appeared to people after His ascension to heaven (3 Nephi 10:18-19)
Bible> – Christ appeared to people before His ascension to Heaven (John 20:17)
7. Book of Mormon – remission of sins was accomplished approximately 500 years before Jesus died on the cross (Mosiah 3:13)
Bible – remission of sins was not obtained until after Jesus was crucified (Luke 24:47; Heb. 9:11-18; Rev. 1:5)
8. Book of Mormon – God’s scheme of redemption was known centuries before Jesus came to earth (Mosiah 3:13)
Bible – the scheme of redemption was revealed in the 1st century (Eph. 3:5)
9. Book of Mormon – the Bible is neither the supreme article of authority nor the final word of God (2 Nephi 29:3-10)
Bible – the Scriptures are to be man’s only creed as they are the final word of God (2 Tim. 3:16-17; Heb. 1:1-2; 2 Peter 1:19-21; Rev. 22:18-19)

This is only a very small sample of the contradictions between books of Mormon doctrine and the Bible. Even from such a small sample, it is clear that both cannot be true. One, or both, must be rejected. It is our contention that the Bible is God’s all-sufficient revelation to man (2 Tim. 3:16-17). The Bible sets out all that is necessary for man to become a saved person and all that is necessary for one to live acceptably to God as a saved person (2 Peter 1:3-4). Thus we must love and follow the Bible – and the Bible alone!
