Who Flunked The Test? I'm so ashamed! Our nation should get down on its knees and repent of our ignorance and our love of it. We flunked the test! We Flunked The Test!! How can we look the other nations of the world in the eye? We flunked The National Science Foundation quiz, and we did so "bad" that only 27% of American adults correctly answered seven of the ten questions asked on that test. We have been hearing about the sad condition of our educational system for the last fifty years, but now it is out in the open. Now we know we're in trouble. There were questions about the oxygen we breathe, the comparative size of electrons and atoms, and how hot the center of the earth is; ten questions in all. We could not even define the word "molecule." But that is not the worst of it; only 44% of us knew that "human beings, as we know them today, developed from earlier species of animals." Can you believe it? We have been taught this "principle of science" since we were little kids, and we still don't know it. And to make matters worse, only 48% of us knew that dinosaurs lived millions of years before the first human ever came along! I'm so ashamed. If this recent test were not embarrassment enough, other polls have shown similar results. A 1991 Gallup poll revealed that only 49% believed man evolved from earlier species of animals, and 96% “professed a belief in God.” Some of us in this scientifically disadvantaged country believe that the Bible is correct when it says that God exists, that God created man, and that "in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is," Exodus 20:11. It just may be that we are neither more nor less ignorant than many other citizens of this planet. Those who write about the obtuse, |
illiterate, provincial (those are big words meaning ignorant) condition of our populace seem to think that it is a foregone conclusion that Darwin's evolution is a fact, Carl Sagan is a god, and the National Science Foundation is our creator and judge. But we know that they are mere humans as we are, and that there is another side to this story. Darwin once thought that the evidence from embryology was the most convincing; "second to none." [Again you must excuse me for using some big words that we obtuse folk may not comprehend.] It was thought by many that Ontogeny Recapitulates Philogeny, or, "the successive stages of individual embryonic development repeat the evolutionary stages of one's animal ancestry." Whether we understand it or not, the scientific world thought it was the last word in proving the theory of evolution. Over a century after Ernst Haeckl was exposed for using fake evidence for this theory, it is still found in some modern text books on Biology, even though it has been discarded as having been proved to be false! In 1957, George Gaylord Simpson of Harvard said, "It is now firmly established that Ontogeny does not recapitulate Philogeny." Maybe that is why so many of us have more confidence in the Bible than in the National Science Foundation. Many claim evolution is a fact of science, but even all scientists are not convinced. Moses would have flunked the test. Jesus, Paul, and John would have flunked. In fact many of the following smart people would have also flunked that test: “The fact that a theory so vague, so insufficiently verifiable, and so far from the criteria otherwise applied in 'hard' science has become a dogma can only be explained on sociological grounds," Ludwig von Bertalanffy, Biologist.
