Prison Report By Larry J. West |
It is interesting to note that the error and false doctrines which we encounter in the prisons are basically the same ones which we have had to deal with over the years on the streets. Sometimes the combination of error and falsity is quite intriguing with their intricate twists and turns. Many of the inmates have never had exposure to Bible preaching/teaching themselves; and a large percentage of the time they have not even seen examples of godly practices of love and caring. For the most part, all they receive inside the walls comes from those who do not truly know God—whether it be those coming in to teach them, “yard preachers” (other inmates who falsely believe that they have some special knowledge of the Scriptures and presume to foist it off on others), radio/television, or materials and periodicals sent in which are filled with error. Very often we run into a more pronounced attitude of belligerence and combativeness. Some seem to feel that it is a particularly rewarding challenge to show the chaplain, or volunteer from the Lord’s church where he is wrong and “straighten him out.” Many times the result is the same. With patience, Bible knowledge, and understanding, the Bible passages that deal with the issue are read and explained so that God’s word may be quite clearly seen. Once again, argumentation will proceed from the mouth of the sinner. Patiently the Scriptures will be further presented along with other points, from the Bible, which reinforce the truth. Anger and hostility arises, possibly because the one in error can see the reasonableness and sensibility, accuracy and truthfulness being presented to him. As a last resort he may conclude the discussion with, “Well, that’s just your interpretation!” He will then go around to just about anyone who will listen boasting that the Christian would not listen to reason even though he had carefully explained what the |
Bible really says and that he is so narrow minded and actually has less knowledge of Scripture than he had originally thought! These who close their eyes and ears to the truth are a part of the “yard preachers.” So how does a chaplain, a volunteer, or any Christian handle such a situation? Continue to maintain a Christ-like attitude (Philippians 2:5—see below); and keep on teaching the Word of God without shame (Romans 1:16) or fear (2 Timothy 1:7; 4:1-5). The first matter to which we must attend is our own preparation (2 Timothy 2:15; 1 Peter 3:15-16). Are you ready? Philippians 2:5 –“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.”
